Henry said the photos were taken over the weekend (March 20 – March 21). These are the first photos to be taken of kids in cages during the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris administration.

Sunday, March 7, 2021. WHY activists in NYC beat a Joe Biden piñata?

The Biden and Harris administration continues to turn back most immigrants at the southern border under a Trump-era order that cited the coronavirus, known as Title 42, unaccompanied children have been the exception.

United We Dream says that Title 42 expulsions are “an unfair policy that uses COVID-19 as an excuse to keep people out of the country and can be reversed immediately, though Biden has chosen not to.”

The organization United We Dream says on UnitedWeDream.org, “127,457 Number of confirmed deportations under Biden (last updated on Monday, March 15, 2021). Under the Biden-Harris Administration’s watch, deportations are taking place daily, despite a promise to stop deportations. This administration must prioritize the safety and healing of immigrant communities – and that means stopping deportations.”

“ICE as an agency has broad authority to decide whether to deport someone or not. Although DHS and ICE create policies on enforcement prioritization (what groups of people it will and will not move to detain and deport), it retains prosecutorial discretion (the authority of an agency or officer to decide what charges to bring and how to pursue each case1), and because of this authority, it can choose whether or not to deport people on a case-by-case basis. So even though President Biden’s moratorium on deportation has been halted by a Texas court, his agency, ICE, can still decide not to deport people,” says United We Dream.

BuzzFeed News and CBS News reported that on Sunday, March 14, 2021, the Biden and Harris administration opened the detention center in West Texas to house unaccompanied children. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) called the facility in Midland, a former camp for oil workers, a “temporary measure,” saying the objective is to get unaccompanied minors out of Border Patrol custody.

According to CBS News, “As of Sunday morning (March 14, 2021), U.S. Border Patrol was holding more than 4,200 unaccompanied migrant children in short-term holding facilities, including jail-like stations unfit to house minors, according to government records reviewed by CBS News.

Nearly 3,000 of the unaccompanied children in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody had been held longer than 72 hours. CBP is legally obligated to transfer most unaccompanied minors to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), the agency which oversees shelters licensed to house children, within three days of taking them into custody.

With thousands of children held in short-term Border Patrol facilities, most of which were built to detain migrant men, detention conditions have become overcrowded, according to lawyers who interviewed minors in U.S. custody.

Children interviewed on Thursday by lawyers conducting oversight as part of a federal court case reported sleeping on the floor; being hungry; only showering once in as many as seven days; and not being able to call family members.

“One of them shared that he could only see the sun when he showered, because you can see the sun through the window,” Neha Desai, a lawyer at the National Center for Youth Law, told CBS News, citing interviews with nearly a dozen children, including an unaccompanied 8-year-old girl.”

Tuesday, March 16, 2021. CBS News: “More than 13,000 migrant children in U.S. custody.”

More than 13,000 unaccompanied migrant children are now in U.S. custody, sources told CBS News. Unaccompanied minors are being held an average of 120 hours in Border Patrol facilities. It’s far longer than the 72 hours allowed by law.

“We are expelling most single adults and families. We are not expelling unaccompanied children,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement.

A Cage is Still a Cage: President Biden Must End U.S. Detention of Children and Families.

Satsuki Ina wrote the article “A Cage is Still a Cage: President Biden Must End U.S. Detention of Children and Families” on Time.com. Part of the article says, “President Biden was elected on a promise to end the inhumanities of the Trump Administration and to reassert America’s commitment to people seeking refuge and a better life. But seven weeks in, advocates are still waiting on Biden to fulfill his campaign promise to end family detention. Recently, the Biden administration reopened the Trump Administration’s massive child detention center in Carrizo Springs, Texas, and is reportedly planning to reopen the infamous Homestead child detention center in Florida. The Washington Post unveiled Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) plans to turn Berks County Detention Center into a women-only facility, and rebrand the two family detention centers in Texas as so called “rapid-processing” centers.

A prison is a prison. That’s true whether it’s called a “family residential facility,” or a “rapid-processing center.” These facilities must be torn down, not renamed.

I know what it’s like to be incarcerated as a child. I’m a Japanese-American who was born behind barbed wire, in the maximum-security Tule Lake Segregation Center during World War II. When I was two years old, I was transferred to the Crystal City Family Internment Camp, run by the Immigration and Naturalization Service — the agency that evolved decades later into ICE. It is just a 20-minute drive away from Carrizo Springs and 45 minutes from the newly rebranded “reception center” in Dilley. When I see migrant children incarcerated today, I cannot help but recall my own childhood. And when I’ve met these children, I’ve seen the same trauma in their eyes that I continue to work through today.

When immigration authorities lock up children and families , they are acting with full knowledge of the long-term trauma they are inflicting.

Years from now, children and families will be wrestling with the trauma of incarceration and demanding to know — as I demanded — why the U.S. government did this to them. We must shut these prison camps down.”
