I covered the rally and part of the march at Grand Army Plaza in the borough of Brooklyn.

The main banner was in orange color. Activists chose the orange color to show support to First Nations in Canada. In May and June 2021, the remains of more than a thousand Indigenous children at unmarked graves were discovered on the grounds of former catholic residential schools. People in Canada are angry. Some people are burning catholic churches.

From the late 1800s until 1996, Canada forcible removed at least 150,000 Indigenous children from their homes. Thousands of Indigenous children died at the catholic residential schools and their bodies rarely returned to their parents. The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is behind a push for criminal charges, while Andrew Phypers, a criminal defence lawyer from the Lower Kootenay Band is working with a group of lawyers to encourage the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open an investigation into the institutions.

A group of people gathered at Grand Army Plaza. Organizers reminded people at the rally that we live on stolen land. We live on Lenape land. Nehemiah Legiste, Isabel, Angeles and Jessica spoke in support of immigrants. After the rally, they marched on Flatbush Avenue towards Manhattan (Flatbush Ave was a trail used by the Lenni-Lenape people).

The inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president and Kamala Harris as the vice president of the United States of America took place on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, marking the start of the four-year term of Joe Biden as president and Kamala Harris as vice president.

Joe and Kamala have been in power for almost 6 months. More than 600,000 people have been deported and expelled since Biden and Harris took office with no end in sight.

Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will deport and expel more immigrants than Republicans Donald Trump and Mike Pence. If deportations and expulsions continue at the same rate, it is possible that Biden and Harris will deport and expel more undocumented immigrants than the Deporter In Chief (former president) Barack Obama and former vice president Joe Biden (2009 to 2017).

On Sunday, July 4, 2021, the day people celebrate the Independence Day of the United States of America, Mexicanos Unidos held a demonstration “to denounce mass deportations, family separation, and child incarceration.”

Autonomous Brown Berets Of NYC said on Instagram and Facebook, “On July 10th Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx will march together in solidarity with all communities that have been impacted by the Demokkrats’ racist immigration policies and false promises. At least 600,000 people have been deported since Biden took office with no end in sight.

Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders are deported at three times the rate of immigrants as a whole and are five times more likely to be deported for criminal convictions than other immigrant groups. Caribbean and African immigrants face the double jeopardy of immigration enforcement and policing. The criminalization and disproportionate policing of Black people results in more Black immigrants ending up in ICE custody and subsequently being deported.

We must recognize these interlocking systems of state repression and organize our communities to fight back.

This is stolen land. The U.S. has no right to deport people. We will continue to fight until this empire crumbles so that we can live in a world without borders. But in the meantime, we demand full protection for all undocumented immigrants, immediate right to citizenship, return of all deportees, family reunification, closure of all detention centers, no more children in cages, abolition of ICE, and open borders for all people fleeing the consequences of U.S. imperialism.

The marches will be organized independently with the support of various groups and individuals working alongside Brown Berets members. This is not a call to action for the government, but for the community to rise up.

We knew electing Biden and Harris was not going to change an inherently racist country into accepting immigrants fleeing countries destabilized by the U.S. The vast majority of immigrants were forced to come to the United States to survive. The vast majority of immigrants are also Black, yet in many circles and media outlets, they are constantly left out of the picture.

The immigration issue is not only a “Latino/ Latin America” issue, it’s a societal one. It is a clear indication of where a countries priorities lie. ANYONE can be an immigrant, but usually, the ones facing the hardest obstacles when it comes to entering the U.S are the poor people of color.”

Deportations and expulsions by Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

The organization United We Dream says that 597,656 is the number of confirm deportations and expulsions under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris (last updated on Thursday, June 24, 2021).

United We Dream adds, “Under the Biden-Harris Administration’s watch, deportations and expulsions are taking place daily, despite a promise to stop deportations. This administration must prioritize the safety and healing of immigrant communities – and that means stopping deportations and expulsions. Join us and take action!”

More than 1,000 children in cages.

Independent reported in June 2021 that “US Customs and Border Protection is holding more than 1,000 children who crossed the US-Mexico border alone, the highest number since 27 April, during an unprecedented surge in young asylum-seekers.

The children, often held in jail-like conditions at facilities with poor health and safety records past a court-mandated limit of three days, will remain in CBP custody until they can be placed in a formal refugee shelter or reunited with a family sponsor already in the country.”

“Lateral flights”

In June 2021, NBC News reported that “The Biden administration is restarting what are known as “lateral flights,” in which migrants crossing into the U.S. from Mexico in one area are transported to another part of the border and often sent back into Mexico from there, according to two immigrant advocacy groups familiar with the government’s decision.

The practice has been criticized by immigration advocates who say it makes some immigrants believe they will be able to stay in the U.S., only to find themselves expelled into an area of Mexico where they have no connections or resources to help them.”

“We should not be summarily expelling asylum seekers without any hearing but certainly should not also be increasing the cruelty and trauma by placing them on these internal flights without any understanding of what’s happening to them,” said Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project.

Migrant children report overcrowding, spoiled food, depression in U.S. shelters.

On Tuesday, June 22, 2021, Reuters reported that “Migrant children sent to emergency shelters within the United States described crowded living conditions, spoiled food, lack of clean clothes and struggles with depression, according to 17 testimonials filed in a court case on Monday (June 21, 2021).

The children, aged nine to 17 and largely from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, in some cases spoke of waiting for months inside emergency shelters overseen by the U.S. government while struggling with the conditions, including trouble sleeping under bright lights and infrequent phone calls to family members.

About 14,500 unaccompanied children are currently in the care of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), down from 22,000 in late April.”
